Kkokjijeom Dance’ Booms
A fun dance, started by popular actor Kim Su-ro, is widely spreading across
the country as it is adopted as a form of exercise by many different groups
of people.
The dance could be called “Triangle Step Dance” because people are lined up
in the shape of triangle with a leader at the point. All the people in the
triangle simultaneously follow every move the leader makes. Thus, it is a
sort of formation dance.
Kim made up this group dance, called “Kkokjijeom Dance” in Korean, when he
was in college. He wanted to cheer up his fellow students and make people
laugh, leading himself to come up with such an exciting dance. Recently, he
starred in the action comedy “Vampire Cop.”
However, the dance hadn’t come to light until Kim performed it on a popular
TV show with his fellow comedians. When people saw him making such humorous
moves with a funny face on TV, they started to follow him. The dance move
became a hit right away.
People all over the country have learned the new dance as a form of exercise.
“People’s Exercise,” which was created in March, 1977 under the
authoritarian military regime of Park Chung-hee, has been replaced by this
new fun exercise.
A number of workers at Homeplus, a big supermarket chain, perform the dance
in front of their customers to entertain them. Cheerleaders at athletic
fields practice the dance, too. Even government employees and soldiers enjoy
the moves. Why don’t you stand up and get some exercise?
