Digital Power: Online Civil Movements
The internet has been used to easily organize many passionate individuals and disseminate relevant knowledge to them, as seen in the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle and more recently in the LGBT rights movement. As the internet establishes a firmer hold within our lives, online civil movements blossom as the issues brought to the attention of a wider and more informed audience begin to stir true discontent with the status quo.
How can the internet be further utilized to increase public participation in the progression of a stable democratic society, in a way that encourages in-depth and level-headed discussion without tipping over to populist discourses?
