Food Prices May Drop for Second Month on Wheat, Sugar, FAO Says By Claudia Carpenter May 15 (Bloomberg) -- Food prices may drop for a second month in May after sugar, wheat and other grains declined, Abdolreza Abbassian of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization said. The FAO food-price index of 55 foods fell to 216.7 in April from 217 in March, the first slide since January 2007, led by declines in sugar and dairy products, Abbassian, secretary of the FAO's intergovernmental group on grains, said in a phone interview today from Rome. Grains extended declines this month, with wheat down 4.6 percent. Sugar slid another 6.4 percent. ``Events in the first two weeks in May give you an indication that the index in May will perhaps go down,'' said Abbassian. ``I can't see why May should go higher unless something dramatic happens.'' The World Bank has said 33 countries may face unrest because of surging food costs and deepening poverty. Rice reached a record $25.07 per 100 pounds on April 24, after China, Vietnam and India curbed exports. Food lines formed in the Philippines and soaring rice prices caused riots in Haiti and Egypt. The FAO index includes ``basic foods'' from cereals, or grains, to vegetable oils, meat, dairy and sugar. It does not include cocoa and coffee. Meat and cereals were the only groups to rise in April, according to figures from Abbassian. The index at 216.7 in April was 53 percent higher than a year earlier, led by a 92 percent jump in cereals and an 84 percent increase in vegetable oils.
