About the film
is a feature length documentary that uncovers a retail giant's assault on
families and American values.
The film dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families
and communities struggling to fight a goliath. A working mother is forced to
turn to public assistance to provide healthcare for her two small children. A
Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to
open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders
after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A
community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins!
Producer/Director Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films take you on an
extraordinary journey that will change the way you think, feel -- and shop.

二、〈Zapatista〉查巴達(★★英文字幕)
1998/DVD/56 min
It is New Year's night 1994, the day the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) comes into effect. To the Mayan Indian communities in the Lacando n
Jungle of Southeastern Mexico, NAFTA symbolizes the culmination of over 500
years of exploitation. That night, 2,000 Indian soldiers occupy several cities
in the state of Chiapas and declare political and economic autonomy. They call
themselves the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN).
"This is not the last gasp of guerrilla resistance in Latin America. What you
see here is not communism or socialism or anarchism. This is something you have
never before in your life imagined. . . this is the Truth."
More Details:
The government responded the way it has always responded to uprisings in the
South, with brutality and violence. It deployed 12,000 troops backed with
attack planes and helicopters. The federal army pushed the Zapatistas back, but
massive protests from all levels of Mexican society forced ito begin
negotiations. Since 1994, the government has repeatedly broken the cease-fire
and popular pressure has repeatedly forced it back down. More than half of the
Mexican army is in the south of Mexico now, waiting for the world to forget the
Zapatistas' voices.
The Zapatistas have outflanked the government's attempts to encirlce them. For
a decade, they have developed and defended an autonomous zone in southern
Mexico. They have inspired a global movement with their radical democracy, the
beauty and clarity of their struggle and their words, and their reinvention of
guerrilla struggle in the post-Cold War era.
Zapatista is the definitve look at one of the most important movements of our
generation. It locates the struggle in a global and historical context, tracing
its roots in 500 years of indigenous resistance and its connections to
movements around the world.

camera is more real."

Editorial Reviews

A trip into the perilous state of Chiapas in southern Mexico is taken in this
documentary, which focuses on the Zapatista National Liberation Army and its
mysterious leader, Subcomandante Marcos. The narration notes that The New York
Times has referred to the struggle of the Zapatistas as the "world's first
postmodern revolution," and there is a remarkably surreal air at times. At one
point Subcomandante Marcos is filmed while posing for the French fashion
magazine Marie Claire, yet there can be no denying that the residents he
champions are extremely poor. The interviews with farmers who fear they will be
murdered by government troops are moving, and a press conference in which tape
recordings of death threats are played is disturbing. The film's director,
Nettie Wild, has a definite point of view and notes stoically that a memo from
American bankers may have inspired the violence directed against the local
rebels by the Mexican government. The background of the rebellion in Chiapas is
told concisely with most of the film consisting of atmospheric footage showing
life in the troubled and violent region. The film crew was itself threatened by
right-wing paramilitary death squads, and the paranoia that is an asset in such
an environment is tensely translated via filmed encounters with government
troops. --Robert J. McNamara
Product Description
On January 1, 1994, the Zapatista National Liberation Army--made up of
impoverished Mayan Indians from the state of Chiapas--took over five towns and
500 ranches in southern Mexico. The government deployed its troops, and at
least 145 people died in the ensuing battle. Fighting for indigenous Mexicans
to regain control over their lives and the land, the Zapatistas and their
charismatic leader, guerilla poet Subcomandante Marcos, began sending their
message to the world via the Internet. The result was what THE NEW YORK TIMES
called "the world’s first postmodern revolution." Years into the uprising,
filmmaker Nettie Wild traveled to the jungle canyons of southern Mexico to film
the elusive and fragile life of the rebellion. Her camera effectively and
movingly captures the personal stories behind a very public clash of
traditional culture and globalization.
