Some Renaissance popes were not known for their learning. Vasari, in his
"Life of Michelangelo" has a good story which is typical of the martial
Christianity of that period.
Pope Julius Ⅱ went one day to see a statue of himself which Michelangelo was
executing. The right hand of the statue was raised in a dignified attitude,
and the artist consulted the pope as to whether he should place a book in the
left. "Put a sword into it," said Julius, "or of letters I know but little."
This was the pope who was said to have thrown into the Tiber the keys of St
Peter, with a declaration that he would thenceforth use the sword of St Paul.
文 藝 復 興 期 間 ， 有 些 教 皇 不 以 學 識 鳴 世 。 瓦 薩 里 的 《 米 開 蘭
基 羅 傳 》 記 載 了 一 個 有 趣 故 事 ， 很 能 代 表 那 個 時 期 好 戰 的 基
督 教 。
有 一 天 ， 教 皇 尤 利 烏 斯 二 世 去 看 米 開 蘭 基 羅 正 為 他 製 作 的 雕
像 ， 雕 像 右 手 很 威 嚴 的 舉 起 。 米 開 蘭 基 羅 和 教 皇 商 量 ， 問
左 手 拿 一 本 書 好 不 好 。 尤 利 烏 斯 說 ： 「 拿 一 把 劍 吧 。 我 對 文
學 沒 有 什 麼 認 識 。 」 據 說 這 位 教 皇 把 聖 彼 得 的 鑰 匙 拋 了 進 臺
伯 河 ， 聲 言 此 後 會 用 聖 保 羅 的 劍 。
【 附 注 】 米 開 蘭 基 羅 （ 1475-1564 ） 就 是 著 名 雕 像 大 衛 （ David ）
的 作 者 ， 瓦 薩 里 （ 1475-1574 ） 所 著 《 偉 大 畫 家 、 雕 刻 家 、 建
築 師 傳 》 （ Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and
Architects ） 則 開 西 方 藝 術 史 研 究 先 河 。
Of letters I know but little 的 letters 即 「 文 學 」 ， 指 「 文 學 」 的
letters 必 須 用 複 數 形 式 ， 例 如 「 文 人 」 是 a man of letters ， 「
文 學 界 」 是 the world of letters 。
