During the English Civil War in 1643, the Parliamentary army under Lord
Fairfax and his son Sir Thomas met the Royalists under the Earl of Newcastle
at Adwalton Moor. In spite of being heavily outnumbered the Fairfaxes won a
startling victory, during which two of the enemy commanders, Colonels Howard
and Heron, were killed. Lord Fairfax was horrified when he found that four of
his men had looted and stripped the body of Colonel Heron. No sooner had he
expressed his anger than a cannon ball struck the four villains, killing two
and severely wounding the others. Fairfax was delighted at this evidence of
divine justice, pointing out to his men that where men were unable to punish
a sinful act, God himself could be relied upon to do it for them.

兩 人 當 場 死 亡 ， 兩 人 重 傷 。 費 爾 法 克 斯 認 為 這 是 上 天 報 應 的
明 示 ， 十 分 高 興 ， 告 訴 手 下 將 士 說 ， 可 恥 的 行 為 ， 有 時 人 不
能 處 罰 ， 上 帝 卻 一 定 會 代 為 懲 處 。
【 附 注 】 Rely on 是 「 信 賴 」 ， 而 那 信 賴 的 意 思 常 引 伸 解 作 「
一 定 」 ， 例 如 ： The job market is very sluggish at present; you mustn 掐
rely on finding a job soon （ 目 前 就 業 市 場 呆 滯 ， 你 不 要 以 為 一 定
會 很 快 找 到 工 作 ） 。
