Women following the British army faced many dangers in the Napoleonic Wars.
One evening the 66th Regiment was advancing towards the river Adour when a
cannon shot flattened a soldier's wife, leaving her apparently dead. Surgeon
Henry, hurrying towards the victim, found to his surprise that she was only
shocked and bruised. When he had assured her that she was not injured and
would live, she was so delighted she decided to reward him, pulling out from
one of her voluminous pockets a chicken, and half a yard of black pudding
from the other. The surgeon told her that payment was not necessary - the
story itself was reward enough.

個 巨 大 口 袋 裡 掏 出 半 碼 長 黑 香 腸 。 亨 利 告 訴 她 說 ， 物 質 報 酬
是 不 必 要 的 ： 她 的 故 事 本 身 就 是 個 很 好 的 報 酬 。
【 附 注 】 Enough （ 足 夠 ） 和 名 詞 連 用 ， 多 置 於 名 詞 之 前 ， 但 偶
然 也 會 置 於 名 詞 之 後 ， 例 如 ： I don't have enough money / money
enough to buy the house （ 我 的 錢 不 夠 買 那 棟 房 子 ） 。 Fool enough 、
man enough 更 是 成 語 ， 例 如 ： He was fool / man enough to admit it （ 他
