這 位 讀 者 猜 得 不 錯 。 Cross my heart 指 基 督 徒 在 胸 前 劃 十 字 架 的
手 勢 ； hope to die 直 譯 是 「 希 望 死 去 」 ， 意 思 則 是 「 所 言 不 實
， 願 天 奪 予 魄 」 。 這 成 語 可 用 來 表 示 「 說 的 是 真 話 」 或 「 會
嚴 守 秘 密 」 ， 多 見 於 小 孩 子 之 口 ， 說 話 者 一 般 會 用 手 在 胸 前
虛 劃 個 十 字 ， 全 句 可 略 作 cross my heart ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） "Please
don't tell the teacher on me." "I won't, cross my heart." （ 「 請 不 要 向 老
師 告 發 我 。 」 「 我 不 會 ， 我 發 誓 不 會 。 」 ） （ 2 ） What I'm

But 和 however 有 什 麼 分 別 ？
But 和 however 中 文 都 可 譯 做 「 但 是 」 ， 不 過 but 語 氣 較 強 。 論 用
法 ， however 是 副 詞 （ adverb ） ， 不 可 連 接 兩 個 子 句 （ clause ）
， 但 可 用 在 句 首 、 句 中 、 句 尾 ； but 是 連 接 詞 ， 可 接 連 子 句 ，
但 也 可 用 在 句 首 ， 使 所 言 更 為 突 出 。 請 看 以 下 一 句 ： He
loved rock music and wanted to go to the concert, but he could not afford the
time （ 他 喜 歡 搖 滾 樂 ， 想 去 聽 那 音 樂 會 ， 但 沒 有 時 間 ） 。 假
如 要 強 調 「 沒 有 時 間 」 ， 可 改 用 獨 立 的 短 句 But he could not
afford the time 。
這 一 句 也 可 用 however 改 寫 ： He loved rock music and wanted to go to
the concert. However, he could not afford the time / He could not, however,
afford the time / He could not afford the time, however 。
