Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War, the German High Seas Fleet
carried out a series of bombardments on seaside towns on the east coast of
England. Much civilian damage was caused. In one Yorkshire family, the man
told his wife to go next door and help their neighbour to pacify her
children. She went to go out of the back door, but he locked it and said, "I
am an Englishman and a Yorkshireman, and they'll l not make us go the back
way!" He then walked to the end of the terrace and stood defiantly facing the
battleships.

【 附 注 】 High Seas 是 「 公 海 」 ， 即 離 陸 地 十 二 海 里 以 外 的 海 域
， 不 隸 屬 任 何 國 家 ， 那 seas 習 慣 用 複 數 形 式 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ）
The ship has sailed the high seas for 25 years （ 這 艘 船 航 行 公 海 已 有
二 十 五 年 ） 。 （ 2 ） The Titanic was lost on the high seas （ 鐵 達 尼 號
在 公 海 沉 沒 ） 。
留 意 damages 指 「 損 害 」 ， 是 不 可 數 名 詞 （ uncountable noun ） ， 無
論 損 害 多 少 都 不 可 說 damages ； 但 是 ， 法 律 上 的 賠 償 卻 須 用 複
數 形 式 的 damages ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） The judge ordered him to pay $100,000
in damages （ 法 官 要 他 付 賠 償 費 十 萬 元 ） 。 （ 2 ） The storm did
great damage （ 暴 風 造 成 很 大 的 破 壞 ） 。
