The commander-in-chief of the British army in the second half of the 19th
century, the Duke of Cambridge （ a grandson of George Ⅲ ） , was not
renowned for his intelligence. He had served as a divisional commander in the
Crimean War. Once, accompanying the legendary Florence Nightingale around the
wards of a hospital in the Crimea, Cambridge recognised a sergeant who had
served in his division. The man had suffered appalling wounds and, addressing
him by name, the Duke jokingly inquired, “ Aren't you dead yet? ”
After the Duke had left, the man told Nightingale, “ So feeling of his Royal
Highness, wasn't it, madam? Bless his heart, he wondered why I'm not dead
yet! ”

， 對 嗎 ？ 嘿 ， 他 不 明 白 我 怎 麼 還 未 死 去 ！ 」
【 附 注 】 克 里 米 亞 戰 爭 （ 1853-56 ） 是 英 、 法 、 土 耳 其 、 薩 丁
尼 亞 四 國 和 俄 國 的 戰 爭 ， 雙 方 死 傷 慘 重 。 南 丁 格 爾 到 戰 地 照
顧 傷 兵 ， 成 為 護 士 制 度 創 始 人 。
Royal Highness 是 對 王 子 、 公 主 的 尊 稱 ， 例 如 His Royal Highness,
Prince Charles 是 「 查 理 太 子 殿 下 」 。 Bless my （ 或 your 、 his 等 ）
heart 則 是 感 歎 語 ， 沒 有 特 別 意 思 。
