Dir. 03-054: Updated Information on Campus Response to SARS
UC DAVIS: VICE CHANCELLOR - ADMINISTRATION
May 12, 2003
DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS/UCDHS ADMINISTRATIVE
OFFICERS
RE: Updated Information on Campus Response to SARS
Questions have arisen regarding the UC Davis response to the recent actions
regarding Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) taken at the Berkeley
campus and widely reported in the local and national press. This directive
is an update to the information on SARS, issued in Directive: 03-045 on
April 8, 2003. The Campus and Health System continue to follow Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidance and
travel advisories, and faculty, staff and students are encouraged to
continue to consult these sources for the most current information about
affected countries.
In addition to the CDC and WHO guidance, the Office of the President has
issued broad guidelines for University campuses. The following broad
guidelines were issued in a press release on May 6, 2003:
The University:
* Strongly advises students, faculty and staff to postpone all
non-essential travel to SARS affected countries and regions until the CDC's
travel advisories are modified or rescinded;
* Recommends that campus officials strongly consider suspending or
postponing upcoming programs hosting groups of students from SARS affected
countries or regions until travel advisories are modified or rescinded.
The Davis campus supports these guidelines, but has not made any decisions
that would affect upcoming programs. Instead, the Campus and the Health
System will implement the following procedures for screening travelers and
visitors. These procedures are in accord with the recently issued Office
of the President Guidelines.
Faculty, staff and students who have traveled in, or are coming to the
campus from affected countries and regions will call a designated medical
professional for a phone screening and counseling prior to returning to or
entering campus. The following individuals have been designated as primary
contacts for these telephone interviews:
STUDENTS
Michelle Famula, M.D.
Tom Ferguson, M.D.
Cowell Student Health Center
530-752-2333
FACULTY AND STAFF
Michael O'Malley, M.D.
Employee Health Services
530-752-2330
(Campus)
UC DAVIS HEALTH SYSTE
Neil Speth, M.D.
Employee Health Services
916-734-7513
(UCDHS)
These medical professionals are also available to answer general questions
from individuals or departments and will be available to assist in
decision-making regarding programs or other special situations. They will
serve as the designated campus contacts for obtaining medical advice and
consultation about possible decisions related to University
business. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to consult their
primary care physician for individual medical treatment, unless the
potential illness is work related.
Unit heads that wish to make decisions regarding specific instructional or
research activities should work with the appropriate dean or vice
chancellor in consultation with the Academic Senate, the Provost and the
Chancellor as necessary.
Please consult with any of the above referenced campus resources, if you
have additional questions.
