Malisse Tumbles to Swift Defeat Tuesday, June 24, 2003 Xavier Malisse, the Belgian who made the Wimbledon semi-finals last year, crashed out of The Championships in straight sets to little-known Frenchman Cyril Saulnier. The 22-year-old 14th seed looked lethargic and a shadow of his former self , losing 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. From the start he lacked consistency. Unforced errors, missed first serves, a despondent attitude and negative body language evoked sympathy in the crowds packed into Court 7. They had been hoping to see some of the magic he displayed in his five-set wins over Greg Rusedski and Richard Krajieck in The Championships last year. But it wasn't to be his day. Countless foot-faults and unlucky net-cords dragged his spirit down even further and all he could do was look on in despair as his 27-year-old opponent out-hit him from the back of the court.
