Clijsters out of brace; outside chance to play Australian Open

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) --

  Kim Clijsters says she has an outside shot of playing in the Australian Open.

  Clijsters' injured left wrist was out of a brace on Monday. But the former
No. 1 is cautious about returning too quickly to the WTA Tour

  ``If the recovery and preparation proceed at 200 percent, there remains a
small chance that she could play in the Australian Open,'' her Web site said.

  The 21-year old reached the final of the last Australian Open, losing to
compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne, before she was forced out with a torn
tendon in her left wrist in March.

  She has attempted two comebacks since, but the wrist injury has proved
persistent and even required surgery in June. Though she is a right-hander, the
injury made it impossible to play her double-fisted backhand.

  After visiting her French doctor in Paris over the weekend, she was cleared
to resume strength training on her wrist but must avoid rolling movements.

  If she fails to make the Australian Open, her comeback is expected at the
February Diamond Games tournament in Antwerp.

  Clijsters was limited to just 22 matches this season because of the injury.
Further darkening a disappointing year, Clijsters and Australian tennis ace
Lleyton Hewitt, who is ranked No. 3, called off their engagement in October.

  Over the weekend Clijsters also announced she has lost her two shirt sponsors
and will start her season without a major commercial backer.
