Henin-Hardenne out of Open

DEFENDING champion Justine Henin-Hardenne is out of this month's Australian Ope
n after withdrawing today with a knee injury.

The former world No.1 missed most of 2004 with a mystery illness, but had arriv
ed in Sydney to contest next week's Medibank International in what would have b
een her first tournament since the US Open in September - and her last before t
he Australian Open starting on January 17.

But Henin-Hardenne stunned tournament director Paul McNamee with her late scrat
ching this afternoon, leaving the season-opening grand slam without last year's
 two women's finalists.

Fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters officially withdrew yesterday because of an ongoin
g wrist injury.

Henin-Hardenne was due to fly home to Europe tonight, her career in tatters aft
er injuring herself practicing in Florida late December.

The 22-year-old was restricted to just nine tournaments in 2004 after being str
uck down with a debilitating illness that sapped her energy and left her consta
ntly feeling lethargic.

After making a brilliant start to the year with victories in Sydney and Dubai e
ither side of her Australian Open triumph, Henin-Hardenne was first sidelined f
or seven weeks with the virus.

The triple grand slam champion attempted a comeback at the French Open but was
confined to bed again for almost three months after crashing out in the second
round as the defending Roland Garros titleholder.

Henin-Hardenne made a brave and glorious return at the Athens Olympics, snaring
 the gold medal, only to lose in the fourth round at the US Open a week later.
