Is Big 12 an endangered species? ESPN.com's Tim Griffin writes that the Big 12 has to be very cautious -- and very aware -- of the machinations going on to either geographic side, in the Big Ten and the Pac-10. Missouri is seen as a leading candidate to join the Big Ten, and Colorado has been mentioned as a target for the Pac-10. If those two defections happen, and Nebraska and/or Iowa State (two other Big Ten candidates) also leave, the Big 12 could be decimated. The best it might do would be to partially reconstitute the old Southwest Conference by grabbing TCU and Houston, and obviously those two were left out when the Big 12 was formed for a reason. Would Rice or SMU also be welcomed back into the fold? Would Tulsa be a possibility? None, obviously, is terribly appetizing. Moreover, would Texas and Oklahoma, the Big 12's powers, want to jump ship? Or would they be content with essentially one obstacle each year to a BCS game? UT is mentioned as a long-shot target of both the Big Ten and the Pac-10, and certainly it's hard to imagine either conference turning down Oklahoma. Adam Rittenberg: "I think the decision here ultimately rests with Texas, which wants to maintain its rivalries with Texas A&M and Oklahoma and make smart financial choices. Texas would have to weigh the increased revenue it would get from the Big Ten against the increased travel costs for playing in the league." Longhorns considering Big Ten? Tom Keegan of the Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Big Ten has had "preliminary exchanges" with Texas about joining the conference. Outside of Notre Dame, the Longhorns are considered the Holy Grail of expansion candidates, but they are considered such a long shot that more likely additions such as Missouri are frequently discussed. But this news suggests that Texas is at least willing to listen to what the Big Ten has to offer. Adding the Longhorns would be a home run for the conference, extending its TV reach into the most fertile recruiting ground in the country. But what would Texas get out of it? The 'Horns already are the biggest fish in a BCS conference, and the biggest program in their state. The additional TV money Texas would receive as a Big Ten member would be reduced by the added travel costs its teams would incur playing a Big Ten schedule. We suppose there is more academic prestige among Big Ten schools. One thing to keep in mind: Keegan's source also says that UT is considering forming its own state-wide TV network, which presumably would remove any benefit of joining the Big Ten. And let's not forget the Pac-10's rumored interest in the Longhorns. Could Texas ultimately be the object of a bidding war between the Big Ten and the Pac-10, perhaps leading to an arrangement similar to Notre Dame's with the Big East? Bruce Feldman: "So much of college football has changed in the past decade or so, and you're at a competitive disadvantage if you're not doing what everyone else is doing. Whether the additions are Utah and BYU or Utah and Colorado, I think the positives for the league's members from a football standpoint -- and that is the prism through which the rest of the college athletics world tends to view things -- far surpass the negatives. Now, is that the prism through which the Pac-10 brass see things? We'll see." -- So truly, if there's light then I want to see it Now that I know what I am looking for Truly, if there's joy then I want to feel it Here in this world is where I want to be 'Cause I can't cry anymore ------Delerium Ft: Nerina Pallot "Truly" -- ※ 編輯: Phater 來自: 216.27.184.34 (02/13 03:04)
