Abstract
The block and event-related designs have been commonly used in functional
magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies to investigate human visual and
auditory systems. The signal to noise ratio is greater for the block design
than that for the event-related design, and data process is also easier for
the block design. There are several scientific arguments on a choice between
design paradigms to study brain functions. In this talk, I will review the
statistical procedures of analyzing fMRI data, and give real data examples to
illustrate the scientific questions that can be addressed via different
experimental designs. Finally, I'll comment on the recent research of using
machine learning techniques to predict mental states, and of investigating
the default mode of brain functions.
