“He has made everything appropriate in its time, yet He has also placed ????
in their hearts, so that man will not discover the work which God has done
from beginning to end” (Eccl 3:11).
Interpretive Options
The crux interpretum in this passage is the Hebrew term ????. Among biblical
scholars, there have been no less than ten interpretive options proposed to
resolve the enigma of this verse. (1) “God has placed knowledge in their
heart” (Hitzig).7 (2) “He has set perpetuity (consciousness of memory) in
their heart” (Barr).8 (3) “God has also set the eternal work of God
(creation in its widest sense) in the hearts of men” (Isaksson).9 (4) “He
has put the world in their heart” (Ecclesiastes Rabbah, Gordis, Jastrow,
Levy).10 (5) “God has placed a sense of time in their heart” (Brown,
Kruger, Provan).11 (6) “He has also placed in them a desire to know the
future” (NJPS margin). (7) “God has placed a desire for permanence in their
heart” (Jenni, Murphy).12 (8) “He has also placed eternity (a sense of
timelessness) in their heart” (Delitzsch, Eaton, Glenn, Kaiser, Kidner,
Longman, Ogden, Seow).13 (9) “God has placed ignorance/darkness in the human
heart” (Barton, Crenshaw, Dahood, Ecclesiastes Rabbah, Targum of Qohelet,
Scott, Whybray, Youngblood).14 (10) “He has placed toil/striving in their
