Last week I had my second course with Master Yao. He
had required me to play the sections 1-4 of Da Hujia
to him before we began our course. It's really a
challenge to do this especially Master Yao had said
that learning Da Hujia for me is just like "Jumping
to the heaven by one step."
Finally Master Yao praise me. He said that now I can
produce beautiful sounds on right hand plucking, but
still too tight on left hand. He also said that I
have good potential to learn Guqin, and I already have
a very good instrument made by Ma Wei-Heng. He accepted
to teach me the small piece "Jiou-Kuang". I hope I
can learn something from him every year!
I found that the concept of "beautiful and comfortible
sounds" is very different in China. They insist that
the third string should be F. In this situation, you
must have a forceful right hand and a very very relax
left hand, or you cannot produce a clear, bright, bold
,full-bodied and resonant sound, because the strings is
very high-tensioned. But actully, this kind of sound is
too big and not sophisticated in some lyrical pieces. Of
course, it is very suitibale to the school of Yao. Those
ancient pieces from "Shen Qi Mi Pu" or "Xi Lu Tang Qin
Tong" really need this sound.
Master Yao told me that the most beautiful sound produced
on earth is Master Gong Yi's playing. I had heard his playing
on CD, in class and in concert, I think I cannot agree him
more. Gong Yi's playing is incrediblly beautiful! I would also
add Cheng Gong Liang to the list. He plucks the string between
"1 huei" to "4 huei", this is a technique developed by Guang Ling
school, thus the player can vary the tone color in wide range.
I must stop here for having a date with a shanghai girl tomorow .
This is the second I dating with here, and surely not the last.
I must date with at least one girl every week. You guys should come
Shanghai, because my sister here told me that "we always have too
many girls, but lack of good guy " . When I visted my sister's friend,
she even said regretfully that if I came shanghai one year early, her
beautiful daughter must be mine!
This week, my homework is the notoriously difficult section 9 "Wrighting
the Letter by Blood ". Challeng again!
