I apologize if my expression makes you think that I am tyrannizing my
students. I consider myself lucky and I take every opportunity to thank
my TAs. My expression was made to send a message to the NTU officials
that we are not paying the TAs enough to make great courses.
The following is an email I sent to my students when I asked them to be my TAs
this semester. Maybe this helps you understand the type of person I am.
The bottom line is: I've never forced any of my students to be my TAs,
especially volunteer TAs.
Thanks for raising the warning sign on the expression that I've made.
I fully agree with the goal that we should give the TAs more financial
support, and I will surely try to take more actions towards the goal
in my power.

Happy New Year. I am writing to ask if you are interested in being a
backup partial TA for the DSA class this year. Currently, I am only
able to get two TAs. But if we get more than 80
students (which is quite likely), we can have 3 TA quota from the
department. I am going to see if there are other graduate students who
apply for the TAship. But if not, I'd need a backup plan.
I am thinking about having partial TAs that grade 2 homework sets only
(or maybe less?) The partial TAs do not need to hold regular TA hours
(unless they want to). A partial TA can get 1/2 of the usual TA
payment.
I understand that you all are working hard on your thesis, and there
is absolutely no obligation in taking the task. Please feel free to
say no to me and I'll just consider other plans. But of course, I'd
appreciate your help in being the backup. Or you can let me know the
load you are willing to contribute. Thanks.
