describe the distribution of the three pairs in the most general terms:

(Notice that [beta] can occur before V or C (in [suβteraneo]'subterranean'),

which means that the segments following the voiced fricatives are irrelevent!)

This rule is called “Spanish spirantization” (spirantization, meaning

stops become fricatives), a process of weakening, because of less airstream

constriction.
