Metaphors and Language Teaching Speaker: Professor Andrew Goatly (Department of English, Lingnan University, Hong Kong) Venue: DFLL New Conference Room, 1F Old Main Library Date: Tuesday, October 31, 2006 Time: 3:30 ~ 5:00 pm Abstract: This talk shows how the author's database of conventional English metaphors, Metalude, can be exploited in two ways in English Language teaching. Firstly, following research in Hong Kong, it demonstrates the possibility of using metaphor themes (conceptual metaphors) to effectively teach vocabulary according to the principles that imagery enhances memory and vocabulary is retained more effectively if words are taught in groups. Secondly it demonstrates ways in which metaphorical patterns in English are realisations of various ideologies, such as those practiced in areas such as sex, race, medicine and economics, and how this might be exploited in teaching to raise students awareness of the power relations behind texts and their vocabularies. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.217.64.113
