Abstract:
Portfolios are collections of students’ work selected by students (with the
teacher’s guidance) to represent their learning experiences. Portfolios
usually involve students selecting and gathering samples of their second
language use into a folder to show peers, parents, and others. Well-prepared
portfolios can show students’ efforts, progress, and achievements.
Therefore, portfolios not only facilitate multiple assessments, but they are
also deemed particularly appropriate for assessing language learning
processes. In addition, the use of portfolios may encourage students to take
control of their own learning and enhance their self-reflection,
internalization, and transfer in the process. Thus, portfolios have been
recently used by teachers to facilitate second language learning and develop
learner autonomy.
This talk will present how portfolios are employed in the language classrooms
and integrated with learning-strategy-based (LSB) instruction, followed by
case studies in English and writing classes. As the results of these studies
show, portfolios can document the planning, learning, monitoring, and
evaluation processes; portfolios can help raise students’ awareness about
learning strategies; and through compiling portfolios, LSB instruction can be
reinforced. Potential difficulties and challenges in using portfolios for
language teaching and assessment will be discussed.
