Abstract:
John of the Cross (1542-1591) was the greatest mystic poet during the Spanish
Golden Age Literature and his Mystical Canticle is his most important work. The
content of the Canticle is an abridged paraphrase of the Canticle of Canticles
(the Song of Solomon), wherein under the image of passionate love are described
the mystical sufferings and longings of a soul in love with God. The Canticle
was composed during the long imprisonment St. John underwent at Toledo from
December 1577 until August 1578. His thesis is that the soul must empty itself
of self in order to be filled with God, that it must be purified of the last
traces of earthly dross before it is fit to become united with God. But to
reach this state imperfections should be removed in what he calls the "Dark
Night", which consists in the passive purgation, where God by heavy trials,
particularly interior ones, perfects and completes what the soul had begun of
its own accord. These resemblances with Eastern spirituality will lead also the
lecture to cultural comparisons between East and West.
(The lecture will be given in Spanish.)
