Abstract:
In Aristotle's Poetics, "pity and fear" are the central emotions for the
experience of tragedy. At the end of the Enlightenment, "fear" reappears in
connection with the sublime, most famously in Kant's Critique of Judgment,
which decisively reorganizes esthetics for modernity. By the time of Freud,
however, "fear" has been replaced with the enigma of "anxiety," which
dominates postmodern thinkers from Heidegger to Lacan. How is the destiny of
the subject reshaped by these transformations of affect?
◎ 演講者簡介：
Charles Shepherdson is Professor of English at the State University
of New York at Albany, where he teaches courses in literary and cultural
theory, with a specialization in continental philosophy and psychoanalysis.
He is the author of Vital Signs: Nature, Culture, Psychoanalysis (Routledge)
and The Epoch of the Body (Stanford), as well as a collection of essays
translated into Serbo-Croatian for a special issue of Zenske Studije (Women's
Studies). A new book, Lacan and the Limits of Language, will appear in the
spring of 2007 with Fordham University Press, together with a collection of
essays translated into Korean. He has received grant support from the Henry
A. Luce Foundation, the Andrew Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment
for the Humanities. In 1998-99, he was a Member in the Institute for Advanced
Study in Princeton, and he is currently a Senior Specialist with the
Fulbright Program for 2006-11.
