English for Specific Purposes (ESP): Through and Across Disciplines
Shih Chien University will hold the International Conference on English
Education on April 25-26, 2009. The conference theme for 2009 is English for
Specific Purposes (ESP): Through and Across Disciplines. . There will be
keynote speeches held by invited speakers, such as Dr. Mary Ellen
Butler-Pascoe, Dr. John Adamson and Dr. Winnie Cheng. The brief introduction
of invited speakers is stated as follows:
Dr. Mary Ellen Butler-Pascoe (U.S.A)
Title: “ESP, Innovation with Technology”
Abstract
Dr. Mary Ellen Butler-Pascoe is the Director of Teaching English to Speakers
of Other Languages (TESOL) and Language Education at Alliant International
University where she also teaches in the TESOL doctoral and master’s
programs. She is well known for her publications, international
presentations, and teacher training in the areas of ESL and EFL pedagogy,
curriculum development, and computer-mediated language teaching. She
co-authored the textbook, Technology and Teaching English Language Learners
and just completed a three-year grant with the Cisco Learning Institute, the
U.S. Department of State, Pearson Publishers, and the Ministry of Education
of the Kingdom of Jordan to establish a blended e-learning English program
for secondary schools in that country. She has also lived, taught EFL, and
conducted teacher training in countries around the world including Japan,
Mexico, Jordan, Ethiopia, Ghana, and England.
Dr. John Adamson (Japan)
Title: “ELT and interdisciplinary attitudes: Insights from Asian contexts”
Abstract
John Adamson received his Doctorate of Education from Leicester University
specializing in the area of inter-cultural interview communication with Thai
learners. He teaches sociolinguistics, study skills and discourse analysis at
college level, as well as Business English at company level in Japan. His
publications have focused on interview discourse, learning strategies,
Teacher Development, and Business English methodology. He has been Senior
Editor of Asian ESP Journal http://www.asian-esp-journal.com / since 2005. He
is also active in his local area of Japan running a teacher research group

Dr. Winnie Cheng (HongKong)
Title: "Promoting ESP learning, teaching and research through
collaboration across disciplines and professions”
Abstract
Winnie Cheng is a Professor, and the Director of the Research Centre for
Professional Communication in English, in Department of English, The Hong
Kong Polytechnic University. Her main research interests include corpus
linguistics, phraseology, intercultural professional communication, discourse
analysis, discourse intonation and intercultural pragmatics. Recent
publications include Intercultural Conversation (2003), A Corpus-driven
Analysis of Discourse Intonation (in press), both of which are published by
John Benjamins, and Professional Communication: Collaboration between
Academics and Practitioners (co-edited with Kong, C.C.K., in press),
published by Hong Kong University Press.
