這裡我想對今天結尾談到metaphysical poet John Donne的
經典名作"The Flea"的結尾在稍微說明一下：
'Tis true; then learn how false, fears be:
Just so much honor, when thou yield'st to me,
Will waste, as this flea's death took life from thee.
可能會造成問題的最後兩句，其實我們可以把"as...so..."的句型還原:
as this flea's death took life from thee,
so much honor will waste when thou yield'st to me
這樣或許就很清楚了：
如同跳蚤的死亡會從妳那帶走生命，
妳屈服於我的求愛下也不過就會喪失那些點貞潔(honor)。
意思也就是說，既然妳把跳蚤打死之後，這樣的小死一次(見註釋一)
會帶走妳瞬間的生命，那麼不如妳就屈服於我的求愛之下，
反正會讓妳喪失的貞節也就等同於妳把跳蚤打死所得到的快感(見註釋一)。
因此，無論如何，女子打死跳蚤或是屈服於lyrical speaker的追求(wooing)，
她要嘛是仍然體驗了性的快感，要嘛還是無法維持住完全的貞節，
所以才會說這名男性的lyrical speaker根本沒有給女性的addressee/auditor選擇，
怎麼樣她都會--尤其是就心靈層次而言，都無把保持完璧之身。

The little death
More widely, it can refer to the spiritual release that comes
with orgasm, or a short period of melancholy or transcendence,
as a result of the expenditure of the "life force". Literary
critic Roland Barthes spoke of la petite mort as the chief objective
of reading literature. He metaphorically used the concept to describe
the feeling one should get when experiencing any great literature.
亦言之，如果我們把跳蚤的死亡解釋成一種consummation--源自法語consommer:
consommer一方面意指燃燒殆盡，一方面同時也意味著洞房，也就是說性的快感與
死亡之間的經驗的互相譬喻性--，那麼跳蚤的死亡其實不代表這首詩裡面男女
之間的愛情的結束，而恰恰相反地象徵著他們愛情的climax/consummation。
而因為這個愛情達到高潮的瞬間會消耗了部分生命的能量("the expenditure of the
'life force'")，因此"the flea's death took life from thee")。
也因此，詩中的女性把跳蚤打死，對於lyrical speaker而言，反而成就了
他們愛情的高潮。而既然跳蚤的死亡象徵著愛情的高潮與頂點，那麼又何必要
拒絕求愛呢？既然接受求愛所失去那點的貞節(或是失去的貞操--與血)，跟
跳蚤死亡所代表的性的意向是相關甚至是成正比的話。
