Some Like It Hot, Others Don’t: Embodiment of Glocal Knowledge
THE NINTH QUADRENNIAL
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Comparative Literature Association of the Republic of China
National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C.
We take great pleasure in announcing that the Ninth Quadrennial International
Conference on Comparative Literature, sponsored by Comparative Literature
Association of the Republic of China and hosted by National Taiwan University,
will be held on NTU’s campus in Taipei, Taiwan, on 18-20 June 2004.
The general theme of the conference is "Some Like It Hot, Others
Don't: Embodiment of Glocal Knowledge."
Weather is a fact that the human beings confront daily in their encounter
with the natural world. And yet the quotidian nature of this encounter
nevertheless has provoked the most amazing forms of systemization by the
human being. However, the discursive power of weather and climate once
wielded in explicating the various facets of humanity seems to have eluded
closer scrutiny by recent critical discourses, so much so that we have nearly
forgotten that as recent as the colonial times weather and climate were
treated as quasi-scientific evidences for substantiating cultural prejudices.
Race, sex, and many other bewildering and bewitching aspects of the tropical
encounter, for example, have been facilely accounted for as being shaped by
the forces of heat and hotness. At a time of intensifying globalization, the
idea of heat has acquired yet other cultural functions: it for instance alerts
us to the alarm bells rung over global warming and the raging fire of
terrorist guerrilla warfare. To be sure, some types of heat need to be
beaten and others don't, depending on the politics involved. And we should
never treat heat lightly.
Under this general theme are seven subtopics:
1. Cultural Representation of Heat and Humidity
2. Climate and Critical Pedagogy
3. Travel, Food, and Tropical Imagination
4. Place, Micro-Literature, and Minor Literature
5. Race, Gender, and Body Heat
6. Sensuality and Bodily Consciousness
7. Fire, Flame, and Dangerous Things in World Literature
The official language of the conference is English. The conference seeks
papers that span the disciplines of literature, film, art, architecture,
music, subculture, etc. Papers accepted will be arranged for presentation
at the conference. We also reserve the right to publish the papers in the
proceedings of the conference.
The deadline for proposals is September 15th, 2003. Notice of acceptance
will be sent before November 15th, 2003. Please send your proposal (300-500
words) and a brief CV to:

小詠, 我日日夜夜止不住地悲傷, 不是為了世間的錯誤, 不是為了身體的殘缺,
而是為了心靈的脆性及它所承受的傷害, 我悲傷它承受了那麼多的傷害,
我疼惜自己能給予別人, 給予世界那麼多,
卻沒辦法使自己過得好一點
