Acquainted with the Night 《熟知黑夜茫茫》
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain - and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
我熟知黑夜茫茫。
我曾雨中出外 - 雨中歸程。
我曾越過最遠的燈光。
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
我曾望向最愁悶的小徑。
我曾與巡邏中的守衛擦身而過
目光向下，不願多加澄清。
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
我曾站立使足下無歌
當遠處一聲打斷了的呼叫
從某街道的房子送播，
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height
One luminary clock against the sky
但不是喚回我或說再會了；
再遠一點於雲端之旁
一座發亮的鐘天上照
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong or right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
宣稱時間是非無妨。
我熟知黑夜茫茫。
解說：這是佛羅斯特一首談夜的十四行詩。其中所謂dropped my eyes，乃指作者不願給
守衛查問，因作者深夜仍在遊蕩。call me back 和 say good-bye 指的是那一聲叫喊。
那座奇怪的發亮大鐘luminary clock 應是月亮的比喻。此詩用韻巧妙，為翻譯添來不少
麻煩。
