My Fair Lady《窈窕淑女》
《My Fair Lady》是齣經典音樂名劇，原名為《賣花女》，是英國文豪蕭柏納根
據古希臘神話創作而成，經過美國百老匯詞曲黃金搭檔 Alan Jay Lerner、Frederick
Loewe 改編之後，於 1956 年在百老匯首次登台，創下連演 2717 場的紀錄；1958 年
登上倫敦西區舞台，再度創下佳績，連演 2281 場；1964 年改編為電影榮獲「最佳影
片」、「最佳導演」等八項金像獎。
《My Fair Lady》主要探討在傳統父權社會中的女性主義議題。片中男主角 Henry
Higgins 是位博學多聞、自信十足的語言學家，女主角 Eliza 是一位卑微的賣花女，
生活在下層階級，卻極具女性自我意識；原本是兩條永不交會的平行線，在一場賭注之
下開始這段不平凡的戀愛故事。雖然在劇中男女主角衝突不斷，Eliza 甚至憤而離開
Higgins，但是別離之後 Higgins 和 Eliza 才驚覺自己態度上的改變，其實彼此是深
愛著對方的，最後，逐漸遠離的兩條平行線又再度相聚。
本劇作者 Alan Jay Lerner、Frederick Loewe (被稱為 L&L) 在百老匯歷史中可
謂最受歡迎的搭檔，他們在 1942 年首次聯手，附續發表《Brigadoon》、《Paint Your
Wagon》等轟動一時之名劇作，兩人可謂是劇史上的傳奇作家。

女主角 Eliza 的父親 Dolittle 原本是常向女兒討錢喝酒的老混混，但 Higgins
在一次偶然機會中看出其天賦，並薦舉他成為一位道德演說家；發達之後，Dolittle
將脫離貧困但自由環境，步入富裕但受縛的生活中，他的心境是徬徨的、是游移的、
是惋惜的，卻又是興奮的，多種情緒彼此劇烈衝擊、洶湧澎湃。而，續絃對他來說更
是一種承諾，他必須再次負起對家庭的責任。
此時，他的願望是能趁婚禮前，最後短短幾小時中，再去回味那些將不復擁有的
過去回憶，接著懷著不情願但欣喜的心情，步入禮堂完成婚禮，這也象徵著放浪形骸
、無所事事生活的終點站。

這首歌生動地描寫出二十世紀初期英國下層階級對於基本生活的嚮往，工業革命
並沒有為所有人民帶來福祉，甚至拉大窮人與富人間的生活差距，猶如天壤之別一般
。本首歌曲後半，Eliza 直截地說出懷春少女那「女蘿盼依喬木」的心境，讓人深刻
感受到，既使是窮人女孩也有追求幸福美滿的權利。

Higgins 為了訓練 Eliza 有正確英語腔調而徹夜奮戰，絲毫不肯放鬆，連管
家和僕人都看不下去直要主人盡快就寢，當然 Eliza 也不好受，擁有奇怪的腔調
本非其所願，在被逼迫的情況之下苦練發音更是有苦說不出；就在眾人心神俱疲、
神智彌留的時候，Eliza 突然開竅了！她說得如此正確而流利讓在場者包括 Higgins
都驚喜不已且雀躍異常。對 Eliza 與 Higgins 而言，真可謂苦盡甘來啊！
歌詞中 Eliza 所練習的那首繞口令，藉著女聲部朗誦唸出，音調極有律動感
，彷彿聽見 Eliza 初次頓悟時的那種滿溢著歡喜的語調。而就一位自我要求甚高
的語言學家 Higgins 而言，脫口說出「By George」這種隨性的英文，也讓歌曲充
滿著詼諧感覺。

這首曲目是出現在 Eliza 剛展開新生活時；因為 Eliza 已住進 Higgins 的寓所
裡了，其父 Dolittle 四處找不到女兒去討錢，於是如往常一樣到處閑晃。歌曲唱出
了 Dolittle〈Dolittle 就指 Do Little，做很少之意〉的眼高手低的心理，他有不
算短小的志氣，但卻更希望有好運降臨讓他搭順風車，能不費吹灰之力就飛黃騰達。
果真，在 Higgins 的薦舉之下，他從沒沒無聞的老混混，變成為經濟自主的中產階級
。好個「一丁點兒的運氣」啊！

也能深刻感受到她是多渴望表現傑出的自己，尤其是在她辛勤努力之後。

誇耀自己的能力；加上 Eliza 對於自己未來的無助與徬徨，於是 Eliza 憤而不告而
別，Higgins 於是求助他母親，發現 Eliza 也在此處；在攤開天窗談話後，兩人對
彼此的心意更加瞭然，但直到兩人分開後才真正體認到對方的重要性。
這首歌就是 Higgins 在第二次別離之後所唱的，之中蘊含著深深情意，原來六
個月來的朝夕相處已經在兩人心田中種下情種了。

然而 Eliza 無法忘記與 Higgins 的種種，Eliza 與年輕人最終仍是郎有情，妹無意。
這首歌寫的情意綿綿，深情款款，雖然是不成功的單戀，卻極為浪漫而令人感動。
