Betel nut is an important and special product of Taiwan, and selling betel nuts
is also an important career that can’t be neglected. In Taiwan, there are many
young girls doing this kind of job. The girls may not have been well educated,
but they still can make abundance of benefits by selling betel nuts. If selling
betel nuts has been banned, many people will loss their own job, and that will
be a new and serious problem in Taiwan society.
However, growing betel nut trees is a way to flourish the local economy. Deep
into the remote mountainous areas lacking the latest information and employment
opportunity, it seems that the locals have no choice but to sell betel nuts
just to make ends meet. In fact, this betel nut industry has virtually improved
the living conditions of numerous families; with the money they have earned,
they tend to gain the capital for other kind of business, thus prosperity began
to thrive.
We all know that betel nuts do harm to Taiwan a lot. The problems have already
emerged as follows. First of all, chewing betel nuts would cause oral cancer
which takes away thousands of lives every year. In addition, the dregs left
destroyed our city environment. Moreover, some people may consider betel-nut
girls on the street pose bad effects on society. Furthermore, growing betel nut
trees on the hills would damage the stability of mountains which brings about
mudslides. However, quite a few families make their living by growing betel nut
trees or selling it. We’ll discuss all the issues above in the coming
paragraphs.
Betel chewing leads to health problems. While betel nut chewers find it
stimulating and thirst-quenching, constantly chewing betel nuts causes'poor
oral hygiene. The alkaline ingredients in betel nuts bring about ulcers.
It may even result in cancer. According to the statistics, 80% of oral cavity
cancer patients in Taiwan have the habit of betel nut chewing. It appears more
serious when considering the proportion of getting oral cancer among betel nut
chewers alone. Many people, even professionals such as dentists and doctors, do
not pay much attention to the changes in their mouths, treating them lightly,
and therefore not able to cure the disease in time. To make things worse, betel
chewing is highly addictive. That’s why some experts highly suggest the
government to ban betel chewing immediately.
Another disadvantage brought by the rampant beetle-nut industry is beetle-nut
beauties. Beetle-nut beauties distract drivers’ attention causing the increase
in the traffic problems, such as car accidents and traffic jam. Besides, those
beetle-nut beauties have some negative effect on foreign tourists’impression
on Taiwan, and a lot of people who didn’t chew beetle-nuts before give it a
try just because they want to approach hot beetle-nut beauties. What’s worse,
it misleads teenage girls into thinking that as long as they sell out their
flesh, they can make money easily.
Undoubtedly, growing betel nut trees is bad for soil conservation and may be
a main cause of mudslides in Taiwan. Not until Herb Typhoon struck Taiwan
severely did people know the gravity of soil conservation. In terms of betel
nuts, we could read from the statistics that one hectare of betel nuts consumes
almost one hundred thousand tons of water in one year. Surprisingly, in the
year 2000, the total area of betel nuts has reached 56500 hectares, 6.28% of
the total arable area in Taiwan. The water consumed by betel nuts is equal to
the sum of industrial water and daily water used by populace. Why do the betel
nuts trees lack the ability of soil conservation? On one aspect, the betel nuts
tree has so few leaves that the rain can hit the ground soil directly and
obviously the flow of rainwater will carry away the soil. On the other hand,
the root of betel nuts tree is extremely short that it can’t hold the water
underground effectively. We should be aware of that the number of betel nut
trees is still booming which deteriorates the situation of soil conservation
in Taiwan.
