1. Succession is a very important concept in forest ecology. Please
explain what this concept is and why it occurs. P;easse also in
terms of community structure, diversity, and productivities early
and late succession communities.
2. Optimality theory plays a major role in today's theotical ecology.
Such an idea has become the main paradigm in explaining plant resource
allocation. One example of this is when the saplings of a species grow
under different light intensities, we usually will observe that saplings
under high light intebsity tend to have lower shoot/root tatio, whereas
saplings under low light intensity tend to have higher S/R ratio.
Another example is that saplings grow in more productive sites tend
to have higher S/R ratio. Please use optimality theory to explain
these two examples.
3. If optimality theory really works, please provides your own explanations
as to why and how plants know they need to do the right things.
4. Self-thinning is another important theoretical concept in today's forest
ecology. Please explain what this concept is and its applications in
forest management.
5. Forest Ecosystem Management (FEM) has become the dominant concept in
today's forest management. An important aspect of FEM is to maintain
forest biodiversity. Please provide some ideas as to how forest
management can help in maintaining biodiversity.

1. Succession is one of the main concept in forest ecology. Please
provide some hypotheses as why such a phenomenon occurs. Please
also discuss how soil properties, forest structure, species diversity
and various aspects of productivity changes through the course of
succession.
2. Please explain the concept of self-thinning,why it occurs and its
role in forest management.
3. Please provide some hypotheses as why net primary productivity
(NPP)tends to decrease as forest age. From this prospective,
please also discuss how appropriate forest management practice
can increase forest NPP.
4. Forest ecosystem management(FEM)is the main paradigm in today's
forest management. One important aspect of FEM is to promote
biodiversity in plantation forest. Please provide some examples
as how traditional silvicultural practices can be used to
achieve such an objective.
5. It is quite common to observe that after nitrogen fertilization,
the proportion of fine root biomass tends to decrease.Based on
the idea of resource allocation, please provide some plausible
hypotheses to explain this phenomenon.
