Not only does it have to find a good global placement solution, placement needs tighter interaction with physical optimizations to improve every picosecond possible. This paper will introduce practical placement techniques that integrate buffering and gate sizing to maximize timing improvement in a standard-cell library based high-performance design flow. Combined with accurate timing models and analysis, these incremental placement techniques simultaneously consider multiple optimization options and make timing-optimal changes under the given timing model. These techniques are equipped with a “Do-no-harm” policy that makes them applicable in incremental optimization frameworks to reform critical subcircuits. Biography: Gi-Joon Nam received the B.S. degree in computer engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, and the M.S. and Ph.D degrees in computer science and engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Since 2001, he has been with the IBM Austin Research Lab, Austin, Texas, where he is primarily working on the physical design space, particularly placement & routing and timing closure flow. His general interests include computer-aided design algorithms, combinatorial optimization, VLSI system designs, and computer architecture. Dr. Nam has been serving on the technical program committee for various conferences including the International Conference on Computer Aided Designs (ICCAD), the International Symposium on Physical Design (ISPD), the Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference (ASPDAC) etc, and is the general chair of ISPD 2009. He is the recipient of 1st place award for the 38th Design Automation Conference Student Design Contest, numerous IBM awards and SIGDA technical leadership award from ACM.
