Scarborough是英格蘭東北部的濱海城市。十二、三世紀時此地擁有通商
特權，每年八月十五日開始長達四十五天的商展吸引全英甚至歐洲大陸的
商人前來買賣，盛極一時。十八世紀時商展復興過一段時間，但競爭的
城鎮已眾，終於在1788年劃下句點。
-borough的發音暫且不表。Cambric是一種針織用的輕棉布。
歌詞字面上看是男歌者要聽眾告訴舊情人達成一些不可能的任務就可回
到他身邊，但本曲版本繁多，亦有對唱、互出難題者。有云Scarborough
Fair可能取材自十七世紀的蘇格蘭民謠The Elfin Knight，其中愛慕而綁
架少女的精靈威脅她完成難題才放人，少女也以其人之道還治其身。
著名的副歌parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme十九世紀才出現，涵義
不詳，可能是其他民謠歌詞的訛傳。parsley（荷蘭芹）、sage（鼠尾草）、
rosemary（迷迭香）、thyme（百里香）都是薄荷科的香草，擺在一起並
非偶然，也激發一些象徵學討論，孰是孰非見仁見智。
