Introduction to BLAST (NCBI) Objectives: This training course will consist of
theoretical and practical sessions. The objective is to introduce the
participants to basic information on the BLAST services available on the
web-server at NCBI for biological sequence analysis. The underlying
principles of these analysis programs will be presented. Participants will
learn how to use these program options (such as filter for query sequence,
database selection, program selection, scoring matrices, format of search
reports, etc.) for sequence analysis. A basic introduction to setting up
local BLAST service will also be presented. Contents: Part I: nucleotide
blast (2008/02/26): Internet resources: biological sequence databases Access
of DNA/Protein sequences: (Entrez) Sequence alignment: pair-wise alignment
Sequence database searching: BLAST (algorithm and parameters) Algorithms:
blastn, megablast, discontiguous megablast Query sequence analysis: filtering
low complexity region Scoring matrices Significance of search results Format
of the BLAST reports Exercises Course language: Chinese
