After wailing his way to greatness in Evita, Antonio Banderas was once
connected with the lead role in Phantom of the Opera. However director
Joel Schumacher has now said that Scottish actor Gerard Butler will sport
the mask when the curtain rises.
Talking to Moviehole, Schumacher confirmed that the star - who already proved
his spooky skills in Dracula 2001 - will lead his adaptation of the Andrew
Lloyd-Webber's musical classic. "He’s the greatest," said Schumacher,
"he’s like the Scottish version of Colin Farrell. He’s just a regular guy,
he says it like it is. And he’s a fabulous singer. When he came in to audition
he blew me and Andrew Lloyd-Webber away. He’s going to be a great Phantom -
a young, sexy Phantom. And I know the Michael Crawford fans are going to be
hysterical, but maybe they should stay home then... "
Butler will be playing opposite Emmy Rossumr, next seen playing Sean Penn's
daughter in Clint Eastwood's Mystic River.
