Near Brawl With Jays May Hurt Yanks Yet
和藍鳥的近距離爭吵終究會傷了洋基

TORONTO, Aug. 8 — A day after the benches cleared twice at Rogers Center,
the Yankees were still feeling the reverberations of their near brawl with
the Toronto Blue Jays.

Roger Clemens faces a suspension for hitting the Blue Jays’ Alex Ríos with
a pitch in the seventh inning Tuesday night after umpires had issued him a
warning. The Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez did not start Wednesday because of a
sore left calf, the result of Josh Towers’s fastball to his leg in the third
inning.

Bob Watson, baseball’s disciplinarian, was asked Wednesday if a pitcher was
automatically suspended after being ejected for hitting a batter.

“It’s automatic after a warning,” Watson said. “I’ll let you put two and
two together.”

If Clemens is suspended, Manager Joe Torre would also be suspended
automatically, probably for one game. That happened to Torre in May after
reliever Scott Proctor was suspended four games for throwing at Yuniesky
Betancourt of the Seattle Mariners.
如果 Clemens被禁賽了, Torre也要為同一場比賽自動被禁賽.

Watson said he had seen nothing more than highlights of the Yankees-Blue Jays
game. Severe weather in New York had left him short-staffed, Watson said, and
he had not yet been able to investigate the incident.

started to bother him, said the condition had not improved overnight. He was

Wilson Betemit started at third base in Rodriguez’s place, and Jorge Posada

the games he had started this season coming into Wednesday’s game. That is
the highest percentage in the American League for players with at least 50
starts.

eight seasons with the Braves. Torre did not see footage of Aaron’s taped
message to Barry Bonds on Tuesday, when Bonds passed Aaron as the career home
run leader, but he acknowledged that it must have been awkward for Aaron.

runs, he did what he felt he should do.”

Torre pointed out that Bonds won several Most Valuable Player awards before
he was reported to have begun using steroids. But when asked if Bonds’s
record was legitimate, Torre did not answer directly.

“All I’m saying is, you still have to hit the home runs,” Torre said. “It

Alex Rodriguez, who has 500 home runs at age 32, left Bonds a voicemail
message to congratulate him on breaking the record. Rodriguez seems to be the

you.”
