Igawa Could Be On Way Up Or Way Out

CLEVELAND, Aug. 10 — When the Yankees gave $26 million to the Hanshin Tigers
last winter to negotiate with Kei Igawa, the deal did not include a
money-back guarantee. Once the money was paid, it was gone for good.

當去年洋基付2600萬給阪神獲得井川慶的議約權, 並不包括退貨保證.

Now, according to a report on Fox Sports’ Web site, the San Diego Padres
have claimed Igawa off waivers and have until the end of the weekend to work
out a trade with the Yankees. But because of their enormous investment, the
Yankees are not prepared to simply give Igawa away.

General Manager Brian Cashman would not comment on the report, which cited
major league sources, because baseball officials are not allowed to disclose

Igawa, who signed a five-year, $20 million contract after the Yankees secured
his rights, is playing for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after failing in

majors. He leads the Yankees in home runs allowed, with 15, despite pitching
only 62 1/3 innings.

Igawa has made two starts for Scranton since his most recent demotion,

The Yankees need a starter for Tuesday because Roger Clemens decided not to
appeal his five-game suspension for throwing at Toronto’s Alex Rios in his
last start. Clemens began serving the suspension Friday, leaving him
ineligible to pitch until Wednesday. Clemens left the team to visit his son,
Koby, who plays for Class A Lexington in the Houston Astros’ farm system.

Manager Joe Torre was suspended for one game and served his punishment
Friday. Before the game, Torre said that Jeff Karstens was “a definite
possibility” to start in Clemens’s place, depending on how much he pitches
this weekend. The best starter lately for Scranton has been Ian Kennedy, who
is not on the Yankees’ 40-man roster.

suspension to serve it at a different time, but the Yankees saw no reason to
manipulate the schedule.

NAGGING INJURIES Catcher Jorge Posada did not start Friday because of a sore
neck. Posada has been uncomfortable for a few days, but the condition did not
improve as much as hoped.

“I’m getting as much treatment as I can today, and we’ll see where we are

after catching his spikes in a seam in the artificial turf in Toronto this

NO HARD FEELINGS Alex Rodriguez said he had no problems with comments by the
Atlanta Braves’ Chipper Jones, who said Wednesday that Rodriguez would face
questions about possible steroid use as he climbed the career home run list.

“Chipper and I go back to high school days,” Rodriguez said. “And I don’t

talking specifically about me, I think he was talking in general. He even
included himself in that. I don’t have a problem.”

soreness in his right calf (not his left calf, as the Yankees initially
said). He said his left leg was fine because, while the ball that hit him in
Toronto was thrown hard enough to leave an impression with its seams, it
struck only muscle.

在星期三因為右小腿(不是稍早公佈的左小腿)疼痛休兵之後, A-Rod回來先發名單了.

INDIANS’ HAFNER HURTING The Indians slugger Travis Hafner did not start
Friday after a magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed inflammation in his
knee and a slightly strained hamstring. Hafner is expected to be limited to
pinch-hitting duty for three to five days.


Hafner 受傷了.
