THe New York Times Jeter Remembers Rizzuto as a Positive Influence Jeter會記得Rizzuto是他的正面影響人物 By TYLER KEPNER Published: August 15, 2007 http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2007/08/15/sports/15pins.1.190.jpg
1999年ALCS Game 2 Jeter和Rizzuto. Derek Jeter does not collect autographs and is not sentimental by nature. But he has always maintained that a certain signed photograph in his home office carries special significance. It is a picture of Jeter with Phil Rizzuto, his forefather as a champion Yankees shortstop and his unabashed fan. “You always remember the way people treat you, especially when you’re coming up,” Jeter said. Before Jeter established himself as a star, Rizzuto treated him with reverence. When Jeter reached the majors in 1995, Rizzuto told the Yankees’ manager, Buck Showalter, that he was making a mistake by not playing him more. “From the time he stepped on the field, I watched him,” Rizzuto said of Jeter in 2006. “He kept getting better and better.” Before first-pitch ceremonies or Old-Timers’ Days, Rizzuto, who died Monday night at 89, would seek out Jeter and offer encouragement more than advice. Jeter, a perennial optimist, connected with Rizzuto over their dispositions. “He was just always positive,” Jeter said. “It’s always great when you have players that you respect and had played the game and been successful, and they go out of their way to tell you nice things. That’s good to hear.” Yankees Manager Joe Torre said Rizzuto would show up at Yankee Stadium with his fellow Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, asking enthusiastically to see Jeter. Jeter’s affection for Rizzuto, and his respect for his playing career, meant a lot. “Whether it was the shortstop connection or spending their whole career in a Yankees uniform, there was an automatic bond there,” Torre said. “Derek knew all about him and made him feel very important. I think that was very important to Phil.” Jeter is 6 feet 3 inches, 9 inches taller than Rizzuto, and he said he was amazed at how small Rizzuto was. Jeter would joke about it, and Rizzuto took the ribbing with good humor. Deep down, though, players knew that Rizzuto could not have been a pushover to succeed at 5-6. “A lot of people probably look at him more as an announcer than they do as a player,” the hitting coach Don Mattingly said. “So I’m sure a lot of people didn’t understand the toughness that it took, playing in an age when you didn’t come into second base soft. You were coming in to try to get that guy.” When Mattingly played for the Yankees, Rizzuto would still get in the batting cage at spring training and teach the proper bunting technique. The inability of modern players to bunt exasperated him. “He would speak from experience,” Torre said. “It was so easy for Scooter to do that, he didn’t have any patience for people who couldn’t put the bunt down.” Torre spoke with Berra at his side before last night’s game. Berra, who was a roommate with Rizzuto on the Yankees, felt his loss more acutely than most. They golfed together and played bingo — Rizzuto would drink vodka when he played, Berra said with a twinkle — and their families were close. “We did almost everything together,” said Berra, who made Rizzuto the godfather to his son Larry. Even near the end, Berra said, Rizzuto still followed the Yankees on television, and he was pleased with their turnaround this year. For the rest of the season, the Yankees will wear Rizzuto’s No. 10 in black on the left sleeves of their jerseys, above the black armband that honors Cory Lidle. The flags at Yankee Stadium flew at half-staff, the No. 10 was painted in white in foul territory on the third- and first-base sides, and the ballpark marquee read “Phil Rizzuto 1917-2007.” A floral wreath was placed at Rizzuto’s plaque in Monument Park, and the public-address announcer Bob Sheppard asked for a moment of silence before the game. Rizzuto was the Yankees’ shortstop in the first lineup Sheppard announced at Yankee Stadium, in 1951. “Scooter, we shall miss you,” Sheppard told the crowd, as the organist played “Ave Maria” in the background. “May God bless you, and may you rest in peace.” “May God bless you, and may you rest in peace.”
