When Jason Giambi left Yankee Stadium after Tuesday’s game, he did not seem
at all concerned. Giambi had the game off because of a sore right foot, but
he said he would play the next night.

When Giambi showed up in the clubhouse yesterday, however, the Yankees did
not like what they saw. Though X-rays had shown only a bruise on his foot,
which was hit by a pitch Monday, the Yankees sent Giambi to
NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia hospital before the game for a magnetic
resonance imaging test.

It confirmed the initial diagnosis, and the team said Giambi was day to day
with a bone bruise. But that does not mean he is comfortable.

“Now it’s just a matter of the soreness going away,” Manager Joe Torre
said. “He’s pretty uncomfortable right now, so hopefully the off day will
help, and Friday he can come here and get back in the swing of things.”

Torre had intended to start Giambi at first base last night, but he used Doug
Mientkiewicz there for the fourth game in a row. Mientkiewicz, who went 1 for
3 with a run scored, is 6 for 11 in the four games.

Torre本來昨天晚上要Giambi先發, 但還是用了Mientkiewicz.

MUSSINA IS PENCILED IN Count on Mike Mussina being a part of the Yankees’
 postseason rotation. Joe Torre did not say it directly, but he included
Mussina’s name with those of Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte and Roger
Clemens when asked yesterday if the rookie Ian Kennedy could make a playoff
start.

“Well, with the people we have — we’re talking about Wang and Mussina and
Clemens and Pettitte — even if he’s pitching well, it’s really tough to

certainly expecting him to pitch well, and he may be an option for us if
something happens.”

Mussina has thrown 12 2/3 scoreless innings over his past two starts, evening
his record at 10-10 after losing his spot in the rotation to Kennedy on Sept.
1.

The Yankees have several choices for the back end of their bullpen on the
postseason roster, and with Edwar Ramírez all but assured of a spot, Torre
said he wanted to see more of José Veras, Ron Villone and Brian Bruney.
Villone would be the only left-hander out of the bullpen, Bruney made last
year’s playoff roster and Veras has impressed Torre lately.

TICKET SALES RECORD SET The Yankees announced that they had set a club record
for tickets sold in a season, with 4,262,761 as of yesterday afternoon. The

THE YANKEES’ CHAMPIONS Alan Horne, Jeff Marquez and Daniel McCutchen, the
three pitchers from Class AA Trenton who have been working out with the
Yankees this homestand, were scheduled to leave the team after last night’s
game.
