Bio:
Enters his second consecutive season as Yankees Third Base Coach...joined the
Yankees after spending the 2005 season as a television analyst on ESPN's
Baseball Tonight...Previously served four seasons as Manager of the
Philadelphia Phillies from 2001-'04...finished with 337 wins as Phillies
manager, ninth-best on the franchise's all-time list...was his second stint
as a Major League skipper after managing the San Diego Padres from
10/28/865/28/88 and posting an 81-127 record there...Won 252 games in his
first three seasons as manager of the Phillies, the most by any Phillies
manager since Pat Moran had 278 wins from 1915-1917...Was named the 2001
National League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of
America, the Sporting News, USA Today Baseball Weekly and ESPN the Magazine,
after leading the Phillies to their first winning season since
1993...Previously spent over 12 years as a Major League Third Base Coach with
the Phillies (8/11/88 - 9/29/96 season), Anaheim Angels (1997-99) and Seattle
Mariners (2000)...Began his managerial career in 1986 when he led Triple-A
Las Vegas to the Pacific Coast League title.
Playing Career:
A five-time National League All-Star, Bowa played in 16 Major League seasons
with the Phillies (1970-81), Chicago Cubs (1982-85) and New York Mets
(1985)...posted a .260 career batting average and a .980 lifetime fielding
percentage... appeared in 2,222 career games at shortstop, ranking second in
National League history behind only Ozzie Smith (2,511) and fourth in the
Majors behind Luis Aparicio (2,581), Smith and Cal Ripken, Jr.
(2,302)...holds NL record for highest lifetime fielding percentage as a
shortstop (.980)...held ML record until 1988, now ranks third (based on 1,000
games played) behind Mike Bordick (.982) and Omar Vizquel (.983)...won two
Gold Glove Awards, in 1972 and 1978...in 1971 just his second year in
majorsbroke Ernie Banks' 1959 ML record (.985) for highest fielding
percentage by a shortstop (.987, 11 errors)...holds World Series record for
starting seven double plays in 1980 series vs. Kansas City...was signed by
the Phillies as a non-drafted free agent on 10/12/65.
Personal:
Has one daughter, Victoria (Tori) Ashley...Was a 1963 graduate of McClatchy
High School (Sacramento, CA), where he lettered in baseball and
basketball...attended Sacramento City College...Before joining ESPN in 2004,
previous broadcasting experience included hosting a talk show on WWDB-FM
(Philadelphia) in the late 1970s during the off-season...also wrote a weekly
column for the Philadelphia Journal in 1977...Has been a spokesman for the
American Heart Association since 2001...Was inducted to the South Atlantic
League Hall of Fame in 2002.
