Notes: Mattingly 'shocked' at report
Agent refutes assertion that coach hesitant to manage

NEW YORK -- Don Mattingly was "completely surprised and shocked" by a
newspaper report that painted some hesitation on his part toward potentially
taking the Yankees managerial position, his agent said on Tuesday.
Ray Schulte told MLB.com in a telephone interview that Mattingly was taken
aback by a Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger report claiming he does not feel ready
to manage the Yankees and would be uncomfortable replacing Joe Torre.

Schulte said that Mattingly is waiting to see what the Yankees hierarchy
decides in meetings scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Tampa, Fla. Mattingly
served as Torre's bench coach this season and would be open to serving in
that same capacity in 2008.

"If Joe comes back, Donnie would embrace that opportunity with open arms,"
Schulte said. "If Joe is not coming back, he would be interested in doing

Citing a Mattingly friend, the Star-Ledger reported that Mattingly had
expressed hesitation in recent days to the idea of replacing Torre, who has
reached the playoffs in each of his 12 seasons as manager.

Schulte dismissed the story as "completely false" and "totally fabricated,"
but stressed that Mattingly does consider his relationship with Torre

comfortable with Joe," Schulte said. "He loves working with Joe and thinks of
him as a mentor."

One of the most popular Yankees of his era, playing 14 seasons in New York
from 1982 through 1995, Mattingly completed his first season as Torre's bench
coach in 2007 after serving three seasons as the Yankees' hitting coach. He
was a fill-in manager on two occasions this season while Torre served
one-game suspensions.

A favorite of principal owner George Steinbrenner, Mattingly did recently
express some reservations about taking over the post-Torre Yankees.

In that interview, conducted the day after the Yankees fell in the American
League Division Series to the Cleveland Indians -- their third consecutive
first-round exit in the postseason -- Mattingly stressed that he felt no
matter the decision, Torre must be treated with "respect."

His defense of his mentor was not altogether surprising -- Mattingly has said
that his two greatest regrets are not being able to play with Thurman Munson
and not being able to play for Torre.

Asked directly if he had an interest in managing the Yankees, Mattingly
sidestepped the question.

opportunity to manage. But I'm not worried about the timetable. I'm not
worried about what happens to me at this time."

A-Rod heads west: The clock has started on Alex Rodriguez's offseason plans,
which include sitting down with agent Scott Boras to determine their strategy
going forward.

A-Rod, the probable American League MVP, began talks with Boras in Newport
Beach, Calif., on Sunday, according to the Associated Press, and is expected
to remain in the Golden State for several days.

Rodriguez, 32, holds an opt-out clause that would permit him to forfeit the
final three years and $81 million on his contract, thus becoming a free
agent.

putting all that into the landscape of what decision he's going to make,"
Boras told the AP.

Rodriguez if he opts out, but the club is expected to present Rodriguez with
an offer of a contract extension sometime in the next few weeks.

to opt out. Boras told the AP that he was not sure if the Yankees' decision
on Torre would factor into Rodriguez's thinking.

playing for Joe. Certainly, his entire tenure in New York was with Joe, and

had become as close as it had ever been during their four years together in
