Posada and Rivera at Top of Yanks’ List

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 7 — The Yankees are preparing new offers to their top
free agents, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, in an effort to sign them
before other teams can negotiate with them.

“The offers are going to be very generous offers,” the senior vice
president Hank Steinbrenner said Wednesday night in a telephone interview. “
It comes down to what they’re really looking to do at this point.”

The Yankees made offers of roughly three years and $40 million to both
players, who can talk about money with other teams Tuesday.

“They were fair offers,” Steinbrenner said. “But there’s no question,
within reason — because you can’t be an idiot — we’re going to make very
generous offers.”

Posada’s agents, Seth and Sam Levinson, have met daily with General Manager
Brian Cashman at the general managers’ meetings here. Posada has said he
would like to explore the open market, likely to see if he can find a team
that would offer four guaranteed years. But the general manager of another
interested team said he believed Posada would return to the Yankees.

Rivera’s agent, Fern Cuza, was in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday with
another client, Pedro Martínez. Cuza said he was awaiting a new offer from
the Yankees, who met with Rivera on Oct. 30 in Tampa, Fla.

“I think we’re probably going to just go on the market and see what’s out
there,” Cuza said in a telephone interview. “We’re not too far off from
that period.”

Steinbrenner stressed that the Yankees want Posada, Rivera and Andy Pettitte
to return. He said he planned to speak with Pettitte but would not pressure
him. Pettitte declined his $16 million option Monday, but the Yankees have a
standing offer to him for that amount. He told Houston television station
KRIV that he wants to make a decision before Jan. 1.

“He just has to make up his own mind, and everything he’s talking about is
understandable,” Steinbrenner said. “He had to be pulled out of retirement

Steinbrenner stressed the importance of pitching and said he expected the
Yankees to soon have the parts in place to get them past the division series
under the new manager, Joe Girardi.

playoffs, where we’ve been sitting the last three years,” Steinbrenner
said. “We hopefully have the pitchers we want now, and hopefully we get Andy
back and certainly Mariano. We’ve got the manager we want. I think if
everything falls into place, it won’t be any problem going past the first
round.”

The Yankees need a third baseman to replace Alex Rodriguez, and Miguel
Cabrera of the Florida Marlins is their top option. But Steinbrenner said
that the Yankees’ top three young pitchers — Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes
and Ian Kennedy — would not be dealt to acquire a third baseman.

“As far as trading one of them — and, of course, it would require someone
else as well — for a position player, I have doubts about that,”
 Steinbrenner said. “My choice at this point would be that those three,

Asked if the Yankees would trade Hughes, Chamberlain or Kennedy if an elite
pitcher were on the trade market, Steinbrenner had no comment.

But Steinbrenner is convinced of the importance of pitching, and said, “This
game is 70 percent pitching, and even more in the postseason.”

It stands to reason that the Yankees would be open to trading one of their
young arms for Johan Santana if the Minnesota Twins were to make him
available.

The Twins are trying to re-sign Santana. But it could be that the Yankees are
holding back their primary trading chips in the hopes that Santana will hit
the market.

If that stance keeps the Yankees from trading for Cabrera, they could turn
their attention to the Baltimore Orioles’ Miguel Tejada, who would switch to
third base from shortstop.

A trade for Tejada is a backup plan for the Yankees, who could afford him.
With two years and $26 million left on his contract, the Orioles want to move

The Yankees are doubtful that Peter Angelos, the Orioles’ owner, would make
a major deal with them. But after 10 consecutive losing seasons, Angelos has

“We have to be open-minded to anything,” MacPhail said. “Trying to sign a
free agent here and there and Band-Aid this thing is not a strategy that has
really worked out.”

MacPhail said the Orioles want to rebuild their talent base in all areas,
suggesting they would want multiple players in any deal. They need pitching

through free agency. The Yankees have no interest in the free agent Aaron
