Yankees add four to 40-man roster Got this press release from the Yankees: The New York Yankees announced today they have signed right-handed pitcher Scott Patterson to a Major League contract and added catcher Francisco Cervelli and right-handed pitchers Jeffrey Marquez and Steven White to the 40-man roster. Patterson, 28, was 4-2 with two saves and a 1.05 ERA in 44 combined games (three starts) at Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2007. Over 77.1IP, Patterson struck out 92 batters and walked just nine, surrendering only one home run while holding opponents to a .164 batting average (45-for-274). He led all qualifying Trenton relievers in ERA (1.09), strikeouts (91) and opponent’s batting average (.170), helping the Thunder capture the Eastern League title. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent on June 17, 2006, after spending four-and-a-half seasons pitching in independent leagues for Gateway (Ill.) of the Frontier League (2002-05) and Lancaster (Pa.) of the Atlantic League (2005-06). Cervelli, 21, hit .279 (81-for-290) with 24 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 32 RBI in 89 games with Single-A Tampa in 2007, earning mid- and postseason All-Star honors. Defensively, he led all Florida State League catchers with a 41 percent caught stealing rate (41-for-100) and a .997 fielding percentage (2E, 743TC), having entered the 2007 season rated as the Yankees’ “Best Defensive Catcher” by Baseball America. Over the last two seasons (2006-07), Cervelli batted a combined .289 (123-for-426) with 34 doubles. He was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on March 1, 2003. Marquez, 23, was 15-9 with a 3.65 ERA (155.1IP, 166H, 80R, 63ER, 44BB, 94K) in 27 starts with Double-A Trenton in 2007. He led all Yankees farmhands in wins and innings pitched, recording the second-most victories in Trenton franchise history. In his lone postseason start, Marquez tossed 7.0 scoreless innings (4H, 1BB, 3K), earning the first-round series-clinching win vs. Portland in Trenton’s march to the Eastern League Championship. Selected by the Yankees in the first supplemental round (41st overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Marquez is 35-32 with a 3.40 ERA in 89 career minor league games (86 starts) over four seasons. White, 26, was 7-4 with one save and a 3.38 ERA (104IP, 98H, 45R, 39ER, 34BB, 66K) in 18 combined games (17 starts) at Single-A Tampa and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2007. He also made seven appearances (three starts) for the Peoria Javelinas in the 2007 Arizona Fall League, going 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA (17.1IP, 12ER, 6BB, 11K). In four minor league seasons, White has career record of 28-25 with a 3.64 ERA in 81 games (79 starts). He was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft.
