11:45 p.m. Turns out, Phil Hughes was bothered by his right oblique briefly
in his start in Chicago – the two-inning, rain-washed jobber – but didn’t
say anything. He says it’s no excuse for the way he pitched Tuesday.
Who knows? The one thing that seems for sure is that we won’t see him for
awhile. Once these pitchers stop throwing, they need to get on a program
that takes them from throwing on flat ground to the mound to bullpen sessions
to rehab starts.
Rasner is the guy who will start Sunday, Cashman said. “Who’s throwing
the best down there right now is Darrell Rasner. He’s the guy we’re gonna
tap,” Cashman said. Rasner is 4-0 with an 0.87 ERA in five starts at
Scranton.
Cashman said he is not concerned about Hughes becoming a guy who just can’t
stay healthy. “I’m not building any dossier that says he’s injury-prone,”
Cashman said.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering - this one’s for you, Hank S. in
Tampa (a Dear Reader, of course) – this injury does NOT move up the
timetable for Joba Chamberlain moving from the bullpen to the rotation.
At least that’s what Cashman says. I wonder if the Steinbrenner family
has weighed in on that?
