N.Y. Yankees' acquisition of Xavier Nady could allow Jorge Posada to have
surgery now

BOSTON -- With Xavier Nady on the Yankees, Jorge Posada can look toward 2009
and Johnny Damon can savor some time as a designated hitter.

Posada, whose damaged right shoulder prohibits him from catching, was going
to try to strengthen the shoulder and spend the remainder of this season as a
first baseman or DH.

After yesterday's trade for Nady, the Yankees no longer have an opening. And
since Posada will need at least six months to work back after the surgery, it
seems prudent to have it now so there's a chance he is ready to catch in
spring training next year.

波波的右肩讓他無法蹲捕
本來計畫下半季一面復建肩膀  一面担任DH或一壘手
在交易來Nady之後就沒有空缺這麼做了
而且波波的手術需要至少6個月的復建
似乎現在動手術讓他有機會能在明年春訓時蹲捕才是明智之舉

The Yankees yesterday were not ready to commit to that plan.

"If we feel we have enough pieces, he might not have to delay the surgery,"
general manager Brian Cashman said, "and that's something we'll internally
talk about. It's certainly something that's on the table, because every day
we wait in '08 could affect '09."

To add Nady and reliever Damaso Marte to the roster, the Yankees optioned
outfielder Brett Gardner to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated
reliever LaTroy Hawkins for assignment.

The Yankees wanted Gardner to play every day in the minors, so they kept
Justin Christian as a fifth outfielder and pinch runner.

Hawkins was 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 33 appearances after signing a one-year,
$3.75 million contract as a free agent.

"LaTroy Hawkins is a quality guy," manager Joe Girardi said. "I think he's
played an important role in the maturation of our young pitchers (in the
bullpen). ... It's a tough call for us. It's not easy to do."

With Nady expected to play regularly in left field, Damon becomes the
Yankees' primary DH.

"I love it, being a DH," he said. "I could do it another 10 years. It's great
having the number of outfielders we have. Bobby (Abreu) loves playing the
field. I don't mind it, but I wouldn't say 'love.'"

Damon came out of yesterday's game after eight innings with cramps, but
Girardi said he expected Damon to be able to play tonight.

"It was my whole body," Damon said. "My quads, my hip flexors, everything. I
couldn't straighten out my legs. But I feel fine now. I'll be in there
(tonight)."

Kei Igawa was taken off the 40-man roster in a move unrelated to the trade
with Pittsburgh. Igawa, who cleared outright waivers (no team wanted the
three-plus years left on his contract), remains with Scranton.

Cashman said he wanted to open a spot on the 40-man roster since some players
will soon be coming off the 60-day disabled list: Phil Hughes, Brian Bruney
and possibly Carl Pavano.

"I felt because of Igawa's contract he would get through (waivers)," Casman
said, "and he did."

The Yankees spent $46 million to acquire Igawa, including a $26 million
posting fee, and in 16 big-league games he has a 6.66 ERA and .302 batting
average allowed.

Pavano threw 30 pitches of batting practice yesterday in Tampa, Fla., and is
on track to begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment Tuesday in the
rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Pavano -- in the final season of a four-year,
$39.95 million contract -- is recovering from elbow surgery and has pitched
for the Yankees just twice in he past 37 months.
