NEW YORK --Yankees left fielder Hideki Matsui took 20 swings off a tee and
five soft tosses before Monday night's series opener against the Orioles.
On the disabled list since June 27, Matsui had declined surgery on his
injured left knee in an attempt to return this season. The knee has caused
recurring inflammation since mid-June.

"So far, no problems," Matsui said through a translator after the hitting
session, which he performed with a brace. "So far, it's looking pretty good."

Matsui had an optimistic outlook on his return, saying if all goes well with
the rehabilitation, he could be in condition to play in "about one or two
weeks."

"Hideki's trying to fight through this," general manager Brian Cashman said.
