Call off the contract on Kennedy

Ian Kennedy has pitched in 13 games for the Yankees.
He is 1-4 with a 6.14 ERA. In 57.2 innings, he has
allowed 63 hits and 40 earned runs.

He’s a finesse pitcher on the small side who was a
high pick in the draft and now people think he’s a
bust.

There’s was a finesse lefty on the smallish side who
was a high pick in the draft back in 1984. His first
13 games? 2-7 with a 5.16 ERA. In 75 innings he allowed
78 hits and 43 earned runs. Everybody thought he was a
bust, too.

1984 年時有一位在選秀時以蠻高的順位被選進來的控球型左投手，
前 13 場出賽，戰績 2 勝 7 敗，ERA 5.16。他 75 局被敲 78 安，
責失 43 分。當時大家也都認為他是個失敗者。

His name was Tom Glavine. He now has 305 wins, a World
Series ring and will be elected to the Hall of Fame just
as soon as he’s eligible.

No, I’m not saying Ian Kennedy is going to be Tom Glavine.
I am saying that 12 games and 58.2 innings are not enough
to judge him on. Yes, he said something stupid the other
night. You never said something stupid when you were his
age?

我不是在說阿甘會像 Tom Glavine 一樣，我是說 12 場 58.2 局的

People who have never met Ian think he’s some kind of jerk.
One rabid e-mailer just informed me that Ian is “clearly a
loser.” Another criticized him for getting married during
the playoffs last season. Never mind that those plans were
made a year ahead of time before he had picked up a ball for
the Yankees.

沒遇過阿甘的人會以為他是個笨蛋，有個激進派的人 E-mail 跟我說
阿甘絕對是失敗者。另外有個人批判他在去年季後賽期間結婚的事。
都不管他在開始為洋基投球之前(球隊)所做的年度計劃。

Just calm down. Joe Girardi will talk to Kennedy and tell him
why what he said was wrong. Dave Eiland, Rafael Chaves and
Nardi Contreras will coach him up. I bet Mike Mussina pulls
him aside for a chat. Or maybe Andy Pettitte will handle it.

冷靜下來。吉總會跟阿甘談談，跟他說他那些話錯在哪裡。投手教練團
會訓練他。我想穆帥一定會把他拉到一旁談談，或許派派會去處理。

I have no idea whether he’ll be any good or not. But let’s
give him a chance.

我不知道阿甘會不會有所進步，不過給他個機會吧。

New York baseball fans are supposed to be smart. Smart baseball
fans don’t overreact to small sample sizes.

紐約棒球迷應該是聰明的。聰明的棒球迷不會對小樣本(數據)反應過度。

You wanted them to develop prospects? This is what it’s all
about. For every game where Joba sticks it to the Red Sox at
Fenway, you get somebody else getting knocked around in Anaheim.
It’s all part of the process.
