SIR SIDNEY, REALLY?
Sidney Ponson is 0-2, 11.42 in two starts against Boston this season.
He is 3-13, 6.95 in 22 career starts. He is 2-5, 7.81 at Fenway Park.
Why isn’t Ian Kennedy or Chase Wright or anybody else making this start?

Robinson Cano has hit in nine straight games at 14 of 33
(.424) with five extra-base hits, 10 RBI and only one strikeout.

Derek Jeter (left hand) isn’t going to play today and is doubtful for
tomorrow.

PLAYING UP:
The Yankees are 19-15 against the Red Sox and Rays this season.


UPDATE, 3:02 p.m.: Derek Jeter has been shut down for the rest of the season.
His left hand is wrapped up and he can’t play. He talked a little bit about
the end of the season and how he felt. I asked him how much his left hand was
injured when he was hit by Daniel Cabrera back on May 21.

“It doesn’t matter now,” Jeter said. “I’m not going to make excuses.”

Jeter hit .232 over the next 28 games with six extra-base hits.

Mike Mussina talked about his quest for 20 wins and whether he would want to
return next season. Moose said it comes down to whether he wants to retire
now or keep going and chase 300 wins. Basically, if he comes back for one
season he would probably pitch three more.

As for Brian Cashman, he’s driving back home tomorrow and will contemplate
his decision. This has nothing to do with money, it has everything to do with
whether he wants to subject himself to holding on to one of the most
pressurized jobs in sports. Being GM of the Yankees or Red Sox is different
than being GM of the other 30 teams. Cashman had found a way to work for
George Steinbrenner. But can he find a way to work with his sons? Keep in
mind, Hank and Hal were not involved whatsoever until late in the 2007 season.

Cashman hasn’t decided yet. “It’s 50-50,” he said.

There could be big, big changes coming to the Yankees.
