[新聞] Yanks leaning toward leaving Joba as starter

BOSTON - Joba Chamberlain finished the season having thrown only 100 1/3
innings because of a shoulder injury that caused him to miss a month. If the
Yankees stick to their organizational beliefs, the 23-year-old right-hander
will be limited to 140 innings next season.

Like many teams, the Yankees believe the research that shows young pitchers
should have their workload increased gradually.

But after two seasons of treating the 235-pound Chamberlain with great care,
the Yankees might be ready to just let him pitch in 2009.

Chamberlain wants to start next season in the rotation, and Yankees manager
Joe Girardi sounded inclined to grant that wish yesterday.

"Will the inning restrictions be there next year? Possibly," Girardi said.
"But he's going to be a year stronger. He's got 100 innings, and part of that
was rehabbing a little bit. It's something we'll discuss."

Chamberlain started this season as a reliever, then moved to the rotation in
June. In all, he was 4-3 with a 2.60 ERA. He allowed 87 hits and struck out
118.

Chamberlain was 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA as a starter.

"There are a lot of different things where you can be creative," Girardi
said. "If you have depth in your rotation, (Chamberlain doesn't) have to make
32 starts like everybody else. ... You skip a start here, those type of
things."

Chamberlain was glad to hear that the team's thinking might be changing.

"I've told them what I want to do. I've talked to Joe about it," he said.
"Obviously we want to do what's best for the team. I'm sure we will."

Closing time: The Yankees split a day-night doubleheader against Boston,
winning the first game 6-2 before losing 4-3 in 10 innings.

In the nightcap, Alex Cora tripled off Jose Veras (5-3) and scored the
winning run on a single by Jonathan Van Every. Devern Hansack (1-0) pitched
an inning for the win.

Down 3-1, the Yankees scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie the score.
Juan Miranda had a sacrifice fly and Robinson Cano an RBI single.

The Yankees won 12 of their final 15 games. They finished 89-73, six games
behind the Red Sox for the wild card.

It was the first time since 1976 that the Yankees ended the season with a
doubleheader. They swept Cleveland at Yankee Stadium that season.

No word on Cashman: General manager Brian Cashman is expected to announce
today or tomorrow whether he will remain with the team.

His contract expires on Oct. 31, but the Steinbrenner family has asked
Cashman to reach a decision this week, which he is willing to do.

"It's 50-50," Cashman said on Saturday. "It's an important decision for
everybody. I need to make sure I make the right one."

Extra bases: Bobby Abreu walked, stole second and scored on Xavier Nady's
home run in the first game. Abreu finished the season with 100 runs and 100
RBI. ... Mariano Rivera said he'll know by today whether he will have surgery
on his shoulder to correct bone spurs. ... Yesterday might have been the
final time that Abreu, Jason Giambi, Mike Mussina, Damaso Marte, Andy
Pettitte and Pudge Rodriguez played for the Yankees. All will be free agents
at the end of the season. ... Chien-Ming Wang will report to the team
facility in Tampa this week. The right-hander, out since June because of a
torn ligament and tendon in his right foot, will work up to throwing off the
mound before returning to his home in Taiwan.
