Joba Chamberlain apologized today for "an error in judgement" that led to his drunk driving bust in Nebraska - and Hank Steinbrenner is willing to give the young Yankees star another chance. A state trooper arrested Chamberlain, 23, early Saturday after he pulling him over for speeding and smelling alcohol on the pitcher's breath. He also reported spotting an open container in the front seat of his 2006 BMW. He was charged with driving under the influence and spent the night in a detox center in Lincoln, Neb., his hometown. "I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgement and for putting myself in a difficult situation," Chamberlain said in a statement released by his agent. "I intend to properly resolve this situation and do not intend to be in this situation again," he vowed. "My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season." Chamberlain, whose sizzling fastball and on-the-mound theatrics have made him a favorite among Yankees fans, is due in court tomorrow to be formerly charged, officials said. While acknowledging he didn't know all the details of Chamberlain's arrest, Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner told the Daily News that the team would welcome back the young pitcher with open arms. "If he needs help, we'll certainly give it to him," said Steinbrenner. "It happens," he said. "Everybody deserves a second chance - or even a third chance." "He's 23 years old. He's just very lucky that nothing more serious happened," said Steinbrenner. "We're talking about a really good kid here, and that's what counts." Chamberlain, who returned home to Lincoln after his team failed to make the postseason for the first time in 13 years, was driving on Highway 77 when he was pulled over for speeding at 1 a.m. Saturday, according to Deb Collins, a spokeswoman for the Nebraska State Patrol. Collins said that Chamberlain was "cooperative" and that the trooper who made the arrest "noted that Chamberlain was very polite." Chamberlain was given a preliminary Breathalyzer test on scene but Collins said the result would not be released until the pitcher appeared in court tomorrow. After Chamberlain was arrested he was brought to the Cornhusker Place, an emergency detox center for drunk drivers, Collins said. Once Chamberlain was processed at the center, he was allowed to make a call and have "a sober person pick him up," Collins said. Officials at the detox center declined to comment on Chamberlain. Calls to the office of the Lancaster County Attorney, who will be charging Chamberlain tomorrow, were not returned. Chamberlain, whose parents never married, grew up in modest surroundings and was mostly raised by his wheelchair-bound father, Harlan, after his parents split up when he was infant. He is now mostly estranged from his mother, Jackie Standley, who has long struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. Harlan Chamberlain, who battled polio and was born on a Native American Indian reservation, is a frequent sight at Yankees games. He declined comment when reached by a reporter yesterday. Chamberlain, long a highly-touted prospect, made an electrifying debut with the Yankees in late 2007 and become one of baseball's best relief pitchers. As a set-up man to Mariano Rivera, he had a dominant season before becoming distracted by a swarm of midges and blowing a playoff game that October to the Cleveland Indians. This past season, Chamberlain suffered through rotator cuff tendinitis as he made the transition to become a starting pitcher. The Yankees have announced that he will be in the starting rotation again in 2009. http://tinyurl.com/66wbl9 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 122.126.129.231
